LEARN MORE ABOUT THE WORKS

Hixon Dance will present its new work, The Nameless which examines the mental and emotional toll of war on the common citizenry, and how it creates victims both on and off the battlefield. The work is set to Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8, a profoundly personal composition created during a time of deep depression for the composer due to political coercion by the Soviet Union and while reflecting on the bombing of Dresden during World War 2. The dance explores a different aspect of the war machine in each movement and serves as both a meditation and memorial for victims of war. This dynamic string quartet comes vividly alive in the hands of Hui, Han, Ingersoll, and Davis and is not to be missed!

Barbara Zuck of The Columbus Dispatch said "[Hixon] is having fun in her mock-tormented Within the Interstice. With the Moonlight Sonata on what sounds like a toy piano, all is not right in Hixon's cuckoo's nest, and the dancers' ultimate response to the weight of the world is -- the fetal position.” The light-hearted dance has a connection to Absurdist Theater: a post-war exploration of existentialist ideas and what happens when human existence lacks meaning or purpose. The dancers, entirely focused on themselves and their own illogic, gain nothing from their efforts and end where they began.

The evening concludes with Black Angels performed to the string quartet of the same name by avant-garde American composer George Crumb. The music is for electric instruments with additional maracas, gongs, and crystal harmonica. The dance is influenced by different cultural aesthetics, from Baroque court spectacles to traditional Asian theater. It moves through a series of dream-like images touching on themes of human ritual, spirituality, community, and nature.
